Yorks v Notts, Day One: White Rose on back foot

They were bowled out for 178 - their lowest score in two years - after winning the toss in conditions which aided seam and swing and the visitors closed on a healthy 147 for three to leave them trailing by only 31 runs.

Yorkshire, just one point ahead of their opponents in the Division One table at the start of the game, left out overseas paceman Tino Best because of his recent erratic form and brought back left-arm spinner David Wainwright.

Notts were on top right from the first over when Adam Lyth edged former Yorkshire left-armer Ryan Sidebottom into Chris Read's gloves, and they suffered a further blow with the score on five with the run-out of Jacques Rudolph. The South African could not regain his ground at the bowler's end when there was hesitation with Anthony McGrath over a possible single, Alastair Brown racing in to whip off the bails.

Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale played some positive strokes until Paul Franks replaced Darren Pattinson and he fell lbw to his second ball. Three fours in four balls by McGrath off Andre Adams improved Yorkshire's situation but the bowler soon gained revenge by having McGrath caught behind for 29.

Gerard Brophy, pushing forward, was bowled by Adams and Yorkshire went in to lunch on a shaky 89-5. Adil Rashid was lbw attempting to drive Pattinson soon after the interval but Jonathan Bairstow played some handsome strokes which included three consecutive boundaries off Pattinson.

His resistance was ended by Sidebottom, who produced a good delivery which flicked the off-bail and when Franks had Ajmal Shahzad caught behind, Yorkshire were in big trouble on 144-8.

Wainwright and Steve Patterson helped the tail to wag with a determined 32 stand for the ninth wicket but the end came quickly as Samit Patel gained lbw decisions in consecutive overs against Patterson and Oliver Hannon-Dalby, leaving Wainwright unbeaten on 20.

All of Nottinghamshire's bowlers had something to show for their efforts, Sidebottom, Franks, Adams and Patel each picking up two wickets.

Nottinghamshire began their reply straight after tea with Matt Wood doing most of the early scoring but with the total on 22 in the sixth over he lost Alex Hales who had a wild smear at a loose delivery from Patterson and was well held by wicketkeeper Brophy, diving to his right.

Shahzad, in the side to prove his fitness for a possible Test recall after suffering an ankle injury, was replaced by Hannon-Dalby after four overs had cost him 22 runs. The change brought about a wicket when a good one from Hannon-Dalby nipped back to bowl Mark Wagh, the batsman having faced 35 balls for his four runs.

Patel settled in well with Wood who went on to complete a confident half-century but having reached 59 he was lbw in Patterson's second spell to leave Nottinghamshire on 97-3.

New batsman David Hussey drove Rashid straight back past the bowler for four and he was 35 at the close with Patel on 37, their fourth-wicket stand being worth exactly 50.
