Yorkshire Carnegie v Jersey: Burrows hails impact of new coach Redpath

Ryan Burrows – a man who has had to shoulder more responsibility than most captains would during a turbulent season – says the Premiership mentality of the club’s new leader has given the players a real lift.

“He’s brought in a different focus in terms of him actually having been in the Premiership for the last few years. He’s one of the biggest names in rugby with a big record of working at the top level and has that Premiership mentality,” said Burrows, 26, whose off-field role has grown immeasurably during a spell in which the players have been led by four different coaches.

“It been great for the squad. Everyone has dug in and listened to what he has had to say.

“The biggest thing we’ve noticed in training is his attention to detail; like the detail of whose doing what in set moves and making sure we’re running the right lines.

“These are the things you take for granted in a training session but when you get them wrong on the field of play that’s when mistakes creep in.”

Emboldened by the arrival of the 43-year-old former Sale and Gloucester chief, Burrows and company are hoping to salvage something from what for a long time looked to be a season meandering to a conclusion.

“Bryan came in saying we could reach the top four, but ever since he’s sat us down it’s always been about the next game,” said Burrows, whose side are six points adrift of fourth-placed Nottingham with four games to play. We have got to win every game and treat every one like a cup final and not rely on other teams. If we go and win every game and miss out on the top four then at least we have done as much as we could in these last few weeks of the season.”

Redpath has made just one enforced change with winger David Doherty (concussion) replaced by England Under-20 squad member Taylor Prell.
