Yorkshire contingent unable to shine at Ryedale event

DEVON rider Jonathan Tiernan-Locke outwitted his rivals to win the Ryedale Grand Prix at Helmsley, North Yorkshire, yesterday.

The latest round of the Premier Calendar National Series, the 111-mile event saw the country’s top riders come to Yorkshire for the annual race.

But there was little joy for local riders, with Rapha Condor-Sharp rider Tiernan-Locke holding off Scot Evan Oliphant (Endura Racing) and Team Raleigh’s Dan Fleeman for top spot in the event.

The best of the Yorkshire riders were York Cycleworks’ James Sharp in sixth, and Scott Thwaites (Endura Racing) from Burley in Wharfedale in seventh.

In time trialling, the South Cave course in East Yorkshire once again attracted top class riders from across the country to the county on Saturday.

However, with strong winds and patchy rain, their search for super-fast times was foiled.

Team Pedal Revolution riders made their journey to Yorkshire worthwhile by placing four riders in the top five, all of whom managed to scrape under the 20-minute mark.

Suffolk’s Nino Piccoli was fastest with 20mins 32secs, leading Team Pedal Revolution to the team prize.

His colleague Andy Bason was just three seconds slower in second.

Cheshire’s Barry Charlton (Lyme RC) managed to stop their domination of the podium with 19:52 for third spot, while Jo Rowsell was best of the women with 21:17.

Over longer distances, Hull’s Joel Wainman was victorious in the Ferryhill Wheelers 50-mile event at Kirklevington in North Yorkshire, covering the course in around 1hr 45mins 18secs.

His time was good enough for victory by almost seven minutes from Pedalsport CC’s Vince Macklam, while East Bradford CC rider John Dewhurst was third.

Also in North Yorkshire, East Cowton was the headquarters for the Darlington CC 10-mile event earlier in the week, where Ferryhill Wheelers’ Keith Murray won with a time of 21:18.
