Yorkshire golf: Alex Fitzpatrick denies Ben Firth as five White Rose men march into last 32 at Ganton

HALLAMSHIRE'S Alex Fitzpatrick fought back from a two-hole deficit in an all-White Rose clash with Moortown's Ben Firth to earn his place as one of five Yorkshire players in the last 32 of the English men's amateur championship at Ganton.

England Under-16 international Fitzpatrick's 3&1 success denied Firth a second Yorkshire scalp of the day, the Moortown man having beaten Fulford's Craig Smith by two holes in the morning.

Dan Brown, former Dutch Junior Open champion, made his way convincingly into the third round with a 4&3 defeat of Trentham's Gian-Marco Petrozzi, who last month came fourth in the Brabazon Trophy won by Meltham's Jamie Bower.

Malton & Norton's David Hague - twice a winner this season of Yorkshire Order of Merit tournaments - prevailed in an all-Yorkshire encounter with Pannal's Oliver White, 2&1.

In the match immediately behind, Fulford's James Cass was forced to go to extra holes by Sherborne's Thomas Plumb before winning at the 20th.

Hull's Steve Robins - who blitzed Flackwell Heath's Jack Haines 7&6 in round one - won 2&1 against Rochford Hundred's Bradley Bawden in the afternoon.

Cookridge Hall's Tom Broxup had been Yorkshire's highest qualifier, tied 10th, but he fell at the first match play hurdle, beaten 2&1 by Cavendish's George Bloor, who recently finished sixth in the Scottish stroke play championship.

The Oaks' James Walker, an England international and winner of the Selborne Salver, went down 3&2 to Weymouth's Tom Robson while Middlesbrough's Angus Montgomery went one hole further before losing 2&1 to Jay Beisser, of The Rayleigh Club.

Yorkshire had already lost three players in the morning's first round, one an inevitability because of the all-White Rose clash between Smith and Firth.

Jonathan Thomson, of Rotherham, only succumbed to Kedleston Park's Ryan Wesselingh at the fourth hole of a sudden-death play-off and Wheatley's Ben Brewster was beaten 5&4 by West Cornwall's Harry Hall.
