England Under-16 international Fitzpatrick stood five under through the 15th hole after a birdie there followed gained strokes at holes one, five, nine and 11, but had his one dropped shot of the round at 17.

Thornton recovered from a double bogey six at his opening hole with birdies at the third and sixth holes.

A dropped shot at eight was offset immediately with a further birdie at the ninth to be out in level-par 37.

He added a second consecutive birdie to start the inward nine, but the 13th and 17th both cost him shots.
