Yorkshire golf: Alison Knowles rides high in English amateur

Hickleton’s Alison Knowles was the highest placed, finishing in a tie for 12th after scores of 77 74 79 76.

Rotherham’s Olivia Winning, the Scottish Women’s Open stroke play champion, tied 17th (78 77 77 77).

Selby’s Ellie Goodall made the top 20 despite a final round of 82, which followed scores of 74 77 77, and Hallamshire’s Holly Morgan finished in equal 23rd place (78 79 75 80).

Giles was the only player to finish under par – and then only by one shot – to triumph by one from Burhill’s Elizabeth Prior.

The new champion carded rounds of 74 75 74 72.

Charlie Daughtrey (Rotherham) finished tied fifth in the English Boys’ Under-16 Open Amateur stroke play championship at Royal Ashdown Forest after finishing three over for the event.

The England Under-16 international shot 75 70 73 73 and accumulated 15 birdies and an eagle during the four rounds.

Lindrick’s Callum Macfie finished just a shot outside the top 10. He had 14 birdies, including five in his closing two-under-par 70, which followed rounds of 75 77 72.

Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard took the McGregor Trophy by an impressive six-shot margin on seven-under-par 281 (73 71 70 67).

Three of Yorkshire’s four competitors who made the cut in the Tillman Trophy at East Sussex National placed in the top 20.

Shipley’s England international Will Whiteoak was 11th (73 73 73 70) while Hull’s Steve Robins (78 69 73 71) and Howley Hall’s Ben Hutchinson (74 70 78 69) shared 18th place.

Malton & Norton’s David Hague (75 70 76 74) was 32nd as Rowlands Castle’s Billy McKenzie won by five shots on 13-under 275 (70 66 73 66).
