Yorkshire golf: Ben Brewster wins Danny Willett Salver on Lindrick GC's new layout

Brewster had shot an equal best-of-the-afternoon score of 71 on the newly-lengthened blue course, which was being used for the first time.

It give him a gross 145 total, the clubhouse lead – and meant he faced a long wait until Lewis Hollingsworth (Tankersley Park) returned a second round 77 to tie for first place.

Lindrick’s par-3 closing hole was the setting for the play-off and a crowd gathered on the banking above the green to watch the finale.

Both players missed the green, but chipped and putted to return pars on their first attempt.

With tension mounting, they played the hole for a second time and Hollingsworth found a bunker and was unable to get up and down while Brewster hit the green and two-putted to win the play-off and the title.

More than a hundred applications were received for the event with 64 making the field, all with handicaps of two and below.

On a very gusty day, only Hollingworth recorded a sub-par round in the morning to lead at halfway on two-under-par 68.

The afternoon proved even tougher with Louis Booth (Worksop) and Brewster both shooting the second round low score of 71.

The trophy for the event, the Danny Willett Salver, was presented by Lindrick captain Tony Grayson to winner Brewster.

In joint third place on nine over par (149) were Matthew Evans (Rotherham GC), Keir Stockdale (Worksop GC) and Dan Housley (Horsley Lodge GC.
