Yorkshire golf: Champions' new-look line-up goes down fighting in Cheshire

After splitting the morning foursomes matches 3-3, Cheshire prevailed in the singles against a line-up that included five White Rose newcomers to win 10-8 overall.

Five players who would have been included in captain Darryl Berry's side were playing in Scotland in the St Andrews Links Trophy - Jamie Bower (Meltham), Will Whiteoak (Shipley), Steve Robins (Hull), Dan Brown (Masham) and Jonathan Thomson (Rotherham) - while stalwart and singles anchorman Jamie Lampkin (Ilkley) had to work.

In came Lindrick's Bailey Gill, Moortown's David Houlding, Malton & Norton's David Hague, Fulford's Charlie Thornton and Rotherham's Charlie Daughtrey.

The latter, an England Under-16 international, was a winner in both the morning and afternoon, while Houlding returned a point and a half.

The morning foursomes were shared, each side producing two wins, two halves and two losses.

Experienced duo Luke Robinson (Hornsea) and Pike Hills' Martin Brown brought in a full point with a 4&3 triumph.

Wath's Nick Poppleton took newcomer Daughtrey under his wing, as Berry had planned, and the reward was a 2&1 win.

Gill and Houlding halved their match, as did Rotherham's Jamie Harrison and the returning Craig Smith, of Fulford.

Wheatley's Kealan Lowe was the only player to achieve a positive result for Berry's men in the first four singles, halving with Sandiway's Rhys Nevin Wharton.

But Robinson and Houlding returned wins in the next two matches, which were followed by halves from Fulford's Charlie Thornton and Brown.

Poppleton went down to a 3&2 loss to Stockport's Dave Peel, but Daughtrey and Smith both triumphed and Harrison halved the final match.
