Yorkshire golf: Cleckheaton GC's Megan Clarke retains girls' county title in thrilling battle with club-mate Olivia Hamilton

MEGAN CLARKE just managed to defy the challenge of her Cleckheaton GC club-mate and friend Olivia Hamilton to retain her Yorkshire girls' championship, at Otley GC.

Clarke and Hamilton, who have been friends since the age of six and both have a handicap of one, were paired together for the two rounds.

Hamilton returned a 72 in the morning to lead the champion by one, but Clarke carded a 75 in the second round to Hamilton's 76.

It left them both on a 148 aggregate, Clarke winning the title, and the Elliot Trophy and Silver Spoon, on count back.

She will represent Yorkshire in the 2016 Champion of Champions Trophy at Woodhall Spa GC in September.

Georgina Hirst, of Flamborough Head GC, took third place on 153 after rounds of 80 and 73.

Hannah Chaudry (Northcliffe GC) won the Handicap Trophy for best net 36-hole score, carding 73 69 for 142.

Lindrick GC's Mia Eales Smith was second, receiving the Pin Tray for her 143 aggregate (74 69).

Toni-Louise Naylor, who recently set a new ladies' course record at her home club, Waterton Park GC, won the best gross first round prize with a 77 and Libby Kilbride (Dore &Totley GC) the afternoon prize with a 79.

Under-16 first round best gross score came from Hickleton GC's Nicola Slater with an 81, and in the afternoon Huddersfield GC's Charlotte Heath took the honours with a 79.

The 18-hole Stableford Bronze Division Trophy went to Grace Eardley (Pannal GC) with 40pts, the host club's Lydia Derbyshire placing second on 35.
