Cookridge Hall’s Tom Broxup fired rounds of 76 and 67 to finish joint 10th among the 64 and ties who made it into the knockout phase.

Malton & Norton’s David Hague (75 70) was the next highest White Rose qualifier, just a shot ahead of Hallamshire’s Alex Fitzpatrick (75 71), Pannal’s Oliver White (73 73) and Moortown’s Ben Firth (67 79), the latter having led after day one.

Masham’s Dan Brown fought back brilliantly from an opening 80 with a four-under-par 68 at Scarborough South Cliff to go through on the same mark as his Yorkshire county team-mates Jonathan Thomson, of Rotherham (78 70), Hull’s Steve Robins (76 72) and The Oaks’ James Walker (75 73).

Middlesbrough’s Angus Montgomery was another on the 148 mark (72 76).

Wheatley’s Ben Brewster (73 76) and two Fulford players – Craig Smith (71 78) and James Cass (70 79) – made it with not a shot to spare and will be involved in preliminary round battles ahead of the round of 64.

Among those who fell just the wrong side of the cut line were Lindrick’s Nathan Fell (78 72), Wheatley’s Kealan Lowe (78 72), Moortown’s David Houlding (77 73) and Howley Hall’s Ben Hutchinson (74 76).

Lindrick’s Bailey Gill made a great attempt to overcome the millstone of a first-round 81 by shooting 70 in the second round, but like Huddersfield’s Jake Hamilton (77 74), Cookridge Hall’s Tom Murray (73 78) and Wath’s Nick Poppleton (72 79) came up two shots shy of qualification.

Broxup had six birdies and an eagle in his 67 around Scarborough South Cliff while Hague also had half a dozen birdies.

Cleckheaton & District’s Olivia Hamilton is tied fifth after the first round of the English girls’ open amateur stroke play championship at The Nottinghamshire after a level-par 73. She lies just two shots off the lead.

Club-mate Megan Clarke had a 76 with an extraordinary run of holes approaching the turn.

She had an albatross two at the seventh, a triple bogey eight at the next, and a birdie at the ninth.
