Yorkshire golf: Fulford GC's Charlie Thornton heads Yorkshire's challenge for Peter McEvoy Trophy

FULFORD GC'S Charlie Thornton produced a fine performance to finish just outside the top 10 in the prestigious Peter McEvoy Trophy at Copt Heath GC.

Thornton fired rounds of 73 68 73 71 to finish one over as Kilkenny GC's Mark Power took the trophy on seven under par.

Hallamshire's GC's Barclay Brown placed 13th (66 76 70 73), having also finished on 285.

Rotherham GC's Charlie Daughtrey (73 71 71 72) was 21st, a place ahead of Hallowes GC's Sam Bairstow (69 72 73 73), while Wakefield GC's Daniel Bradbury placed 33rd (79 67 70 76).

Thornton carded nine birdies through the two days, plus an eagle at the 483-yard seventh hole.

The latter came in his second round 68, which he closed with three birdies in the last four holes.

Brown had opened with a 66 that included a run of four consecutive birdies from the fifth and he finished with 10 birdies for the four rounds.

Daughtrey's birdie tally also reached double figures as he produced the most consistent rounds of the Yorkshire competitors.

The birdie tally included three on the spin from the eighth hole in round one.

Bairstow amassed no fewer than 14 birdies, six of them coming in his opening score of 69, including three in the closing four holes.

Bradbury had nine plus an eagle, the latter also at the seventh, which came in his excellent second round 67 that also included six birdies.

It bettered his opening score by a full dozen shots.
