Thornton took a one-hole lead by birdieing the third, but was back all square after dropping a shot at the sixth.

A par at the eighth was enough to restore his advantage and a birdie at the next put him two up at the turn.

However, he went behind for the first time after losing three holes on the spin from the 12th, all with bogeys.

His opponent faltered at the next and Thornton’s third birdie of the day put him one up playing the last.

But he was forced to concede the 18th, taking the match into extra holes.

The first was halved in pars, and another par was good enough to give the Yorkshire competitor a 20th-hole victory.

He faces another German, Falko Hanisch, in the last eight.
