Yorkshire golf: Gary Allott flies higher than many professionals with albatross

HESSLE GC's Gary Allott, a 24-handicapper, is celebrating an achievement that alludes many professionals in their lifetime - he has carded an albatross.

Playing the 18th hole in the Pro's Betterball competition, he drove into the centre of the fairway and then, from 229 yards out, holed his second shot with a three-wood for a 2 net 1.

The three shots gained to par proved decisive as Allott and his partner Joe Green placed first with a 63, two shots ahead of second-placed father and son, Steve and Nick Fairbank.

Andy Dibnah and Ray Dawson finished third on 66.

Twelve-handicapper Steve Fairbank's disappointment at missing out in the Pro's Betterball will have been eased by his hole-in-one at the 163-yard second hole, using a six-iron, which helped him and son Nick defeat Tony and Joe Allenby in the club's Winter League quarter-finals.

It was Fairbank's second ace, his first having come at the same hole.

Only three weeks before son Nick (6 handicap) had also scored his second hole in one, in the Pro’s Ambrose Scramble.

His came at the 105-yard eighth hole, the scene of his first ace, using a gap wedge.

Jan Barnes and Shaun Kavanagh won the Bill Elvis putter at Hessle with 31pts, one in front of Val Holmes and Martin Keightley.

Liz Hall and Peter Hull were third on 27pts.

The Pro's Individual Stableford saw Division 1 success for Darren Thornton, his 45pts leaving runner-up Peter Mounsor and third-placed Dibnah six points adrift.

Division 2 was won by James Maxwell with 40pts, just one ahead of runner-up Chris Hillan and third-placed Nigel Leighton.

Waterton Park GC's Order of Merit involves a family duel at the top with five events to go.

The competition, which runs from September to August, sees 20pts awarded to first place down to one point for finishing 20th in all the monthly medals and Stableford competitions.

Chris Jennings leads on 48 pts from his son Ryan Jennings (45) with Stephen Owen third on 43 and Wah Lee fourth on 38 pts.

Three players are on 37 - Daniel Wilson, Phil Bell and Peter Clay - while Gordon Owen is eighth on 36, Chris Beaumont ninth on 35 and Phil Goodenough completes the top 10 on 27.

PGA Professional James Bisby will be holding a putting clinic on Tuesday, April 5 at Burstwick Country GC (6:30pm-7:30pm).

Cost is £5 per person and topics covered will include set-up and technique, distance control, how to build a routine and reading greens.

The Bradford GC is holding an Easter School Holiday coaching day for junior members on Thursday, March 31.

Assistant professional Kyle Mathers will take the course, which will run from 9.30am-3.30pm.

The plan is to start with a few holes on the course and Mathers will then run through a number of different coaching exercises and competitions.

The day, which will finish with a small prize giving. costs £25, the price of which includes lunch in the clubhouse.

There are only 10 places available and they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
