Yorkshire golf: Harrogate's Alastair Davidson takes up the reins as YUGC president

HARROGATE’S Alastair Davidson has been elected the president of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs for 2017.

Davidson’s year in the role started at the union’s annual general meeting, held at Pannal

He has been a member of the YUGC executive since 2005 and is currently Chairman of Championships.

Davidson, who plays off 11, is also a member of the England Golf Tournament panel of referees.

Born in Perth, Scotland, he started his golfing life as a member of Eastwood, in Glasgow, in 1960, before joining the Harrogate club in 1974.

He was the club’s men’s captain in 2011 and was also honorary competition secretary of the Harrogate Union of Golf Clubs from 2003-2016.

After leaving Glasgow University with BSc (Hons) and PhD degrees, he worked for ICI and DuPont in R&D, Sales and Marketing from 1974 until his retirement in 2003.

Former Yorkshire player Dan Wasteney (Bondhay) led the way in the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour Qualifying School first stage at Formby Hall, where he shot 70 69. Hillside’s Oliver Clark was one shot back in second place (73 67).

The final stage will be held at Frilford Heath next week.
