Yorkshire golf: John Wells follows in Alex Belt's footsteps by posting Snainton GC win at Malton & Norton GC

JOHN WELLS took full advantage of his Snainton GC stablemate Alex Belt's absence by winning Malton & Norton GC's annual pro-am.

Belt was unable to defend his Tadweld Steel-sponsored title, which was usurped by Wells thanks to a superb five-under-par 67 in a fixture that signals the start of the Yorkshire PGA pro-am season.

The course was presented excellent condition and 30 teams battled it out on the Welham course.

Wells earned £1,000 for his victory while the winning team, on 19 under par, was led home by professional Nial Murphy, who partnered amateurs, M Kensit, S Moyser and D Sanderson.

Another fine Friday enabled a full programme of sixteen fixtures to

be completed.

Comprehensive 7-1 home wins for Halifax and Woodsome Hall, over South Bradford and Calverley respectively, saw them move to the head of Section A in the Lawrence Batley Seniors League.

However, a 6-2 away win by West Bradford at Marsden - the only victory for a visiting side in the section - and Crosland Heath's narrow 5-3 defeat at Bradford Moor leaves it very tight at the top.

Halifax and Woodsome lead on 13pts, but the latter have played one match fewer.

The away teams fared better in Section B with Crow Nest Park in particular enjoying a good win, on their travel 6-2, at West End.

Draws for Todmorden at Outlane and for Elland at Branshaw plus a narrow 5-3 defeat for Hebden Bridge at Silkstone completed the section's fixtures.

Crow Nest Park lead the way by a point from Elland and Branshaw with Silkstone in close attendance.

In Section C, Werneth’s fine start to the season continued with an 8-0 home win over Dewsbury District seeing them romp to the top of the table.

An away win for Hanging Heaton, 5-3 at Bradley Park, kept them in touch, while Meltham recovered from the previous week’s heavy defeat to post a 7-1 home victory against Saddleworth.

Another home win saw Low Laithes, 6-2 over South Leeds, means they remain in charge in Section D, four points ahead of Queensbury, who lost 5-3 at Lightcliffe.

However, with a game in hand, Bradley Hall are well placed following a commendable 6-2 win at Wortley.

Similarly, Blackley’s 7-1 home win over Huddersfield kept them level with Bradley Hall on 11 points from only two fixtures.
