Yorkshire golf: Michael Hay and Ben Schmidt enjoy county title success at Driffield

YORKSHIRE'S Boys' Under-16 championship produced a dramatic three-way tie with Hunley Hall's Michael Hay taking the title thanks to a superb second-round 67 at Driffield.

The county's Under-14 championship went to Ben Schmidt (Rotherham) with two superb rounds of 73 72.

Schmidt's club-mate Charlie Daughtrey was the early leader in the Under-16 event with an excellent two-under-par 68. He was out in level par and came back home with three birdies and a bogey for an inward 32.

Several players recorded scores in the 70s, including Jack Maxey (Burstwick; 72) and Tom Duck (Scarborough NC; 73).

Towards the end of the morning Lindrick's Tom Osborne carded a level-par 70, which included one birdie and one bogey in a steady round.

The afternoon produced some great scoring with the majority of the field returning scores in the 70s as the wind dropped.

England Under-16 international Daughtrey was favourite to prevail, but unfortunately fell away with three bogeys on his back nine.

His playing partners were George Heath (Woodsome Hall) and Hay. The former shot 70 while Hay came in with his 67, a disappointing three-putt on the 10th for a bogey finding adequate compensation in the form of four birdies.

Daughtrey and Hay were therefore level on 142 with only one player left on the course who could pip them in Osborne.

He was level going through the ninth, but unfortunately then had a double bogey on a short par-3. He bounced back with a birdie and was still only one over as he teed off on the 18th.

His second shot came up short on the last, but a good chip left him with a 10ft putt for the championship.

He missed, finishing his two rounds alongside Daughtrey and Hay on 142.

In the closest finish for several years, a three-way tie was decided on the best second round and the title therefore went to Hay.

Under-14 champion Schmidt showed superb course management, which led to his title success.

Phil Woodcock, Yorkshire Boys' chairman, said: "The day was very successful with some wonderful scoring that produced two very worthy champions.

"All our boys are very competitive and the scoring was exceptional for the ages of the boys, especially with three sub-par rounds."
