Yorkshire golf: Mike Kenzitt quick to make an impression as Willow Valley captain

Willow Valley captain Mike Kenzitt won the Saturday Stableford with 39pts.

But he started the 2016 season by earning one as his score of 39pts secured victory in the first-class section of the club's Saturday Stableford.

The 15-handicapper began his round with a par for two points only to stumble at the next for what proved to be the only blob on his card.

Recovery was immediate and impressive with a run of four net birdies in five holes helping him to an outward total of 20pts.

David Uttley drives himself in as Wakefield GC captain in the club's 125th year.

He secured another net birdie at the beginning of the back nine and evened out dropped points at holes 11 and 16 with net birdies at 15 and 18.

Runner-up Nigel Richardson was just a point back of Kenzitt.

The second-class section produced some very high scores, Mark Budby taking the honours with 44, two ahead of runner-up Terry Dewing.

"With the weather being a bit better, we had a full weekend's play for once," said Willow Valley's professional Neil McBride.

"This weekend really did feel like the start of the golf season again.

"Saturday's competition was very well attended with plenty of the members keen to shake off the winter cobwebs."

Sunday saw Willow Valley's Winter League group stage completed, with the top two pairings from each group of 10 advancing.

Shaun Helliwell and Ben Walker, and Chris Sweeney and Kevin Buck progress into the last four as winners of their groups.

The semi-finals on March 26-27 will see Helliwell and Walker take on Adam Turner and Jon Shaw while Sweeney and Buck face Jeremy Bakes and Dan Waddington.

Wakefield GC captain David Uttley drove himself in to celebrate the start of his term of office as well as launch the 125th anniversary of the club's foundation.

Surrounded by members, friends and family, he managed a good drive, which new vice-captain Eddie Taylor had to measure and retrieve the ball.

"I am honoured and delighted to be captain in the 125th year of this prestigious club and look forward to the many events being organised to celebrate the anniversary," said Uttley.

Huddersfield GC's Aron Schnacke might have believed he was heading towards the professional ranks with another club victory when he and partner Graeme Brodie amassed 47pts in the Four Ball Better Ball Stableford.

However, the pair were bested on a countback by Jim Wilson and Paul Dyson, who produced a similarly impressive score.

Richard Sewell and Tom Stratford were third on 46, with Alan Seery and David Seery a shot further back in fourth place.

Nearest the pin at the eighth was Adrian Dean and this accolade at the 11th went to Jon Russell.

The Mixed Greensome Stableford was won by M and A Tracey on 49pts, three ahead of runners-up S Lum and M.Donaldson.

V Wimpenny and C Greenwood placed third (43).

Hessle GC have opened entries for the Raywell Amateur Classic, a Yorkshire Order of Merit event to be held on April 28.

Entry fee for the 36-hole scratch competition is Â£30 and covers the cost of soup and sandwiches. There is a handicap limit of five.

Closing date for entries is April 21.

Division One of the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs' Millennium Stableford at Hessle was won by Nick Fairbank with 39pts, one more than runner-up Andrew Challis and third-placed Andrew Greetham.

Victory in Division Two went to Darren Thornton who amassed 44pts to win by three from Brian Nicol.

Richard Roantree totalled 42pts to best Division Three runner-up Ben Miller by just a point.

Rotherham GC captain Steve Mulligan will stage his end of term Charity Am-Am in aid of Rotherham Cancer care at the club on April 8.

The format for the day is teams of four using a three-quarters handicap allowance.

It is open to both members and guests and entry is Â£140 per team, which also covers a meal afterwards and a prize table.

It will have a shotgun 1pm start and entries can be made in the pro shop at the club.

Hornsea GC saw both their Pro's Stableford competitions, on Saturday and Sunday, won by improving junior Will Marshall, with 46 and 41pts respectively.

David Hickson (42pts) was runner-up on the first occasion and Malcolm Train (35) on the second.
