Yorkshire golf: Phil Woodcock delighted as Yorkshire Boys win in commanding fashion

After winning his foursomes match to help Yorkshire to a 5-1 lead, Raybould got ahead early in his singles match at the top of the order and went on to win 3&2 and pave the way for a 10-2 afternoon's return.

Phil Woodcock, the chairman of the Yorkshire Boys, who was supervising his first match, commented: "I am very proud of the boys. As requested, they worked together and played as a team, which is an essential part of winning.

"They were all outstanding, and I congratulate them”.

The greens were very soft and spongy, but Yorkshire quickly saw dividends from the work they have put in on their short game during the winter.

All six pairings were quickly ahead in the foursomes with some superb golf, and through the 13th hole they were all up by more than four apart from Tom North (Howley Hall) and Nathan Seal (Knaresborough), who were nevertheless one hole to the good.

However, on the run-in they encountered some excellent golf from their opponents and succumbed 2&1.

A good crowd, with support drawn from both sides, followed the matches out in the afternoon and the first few started out in dry weather.

After four holes Yorkshire were up in six, all square in four and down in two - and then all 24 players found themselves having to deal with strong winds and torrential rain.

Many spectators retired to the shelter of the clubhouse and, with the greens beginning to flood, the host club's secretary was armed with a claxon, ready to signal an abandonment in play.

The match between the two last year in Derbyshire had to be abandoned because of snow, but fortunately this time the rain eased and the greens remained free of standing water.

By the 13th hole, again most of the Yorkshire Boys were up and they went on to win the series 10-2.

Seal, who was on his first outing for Yorkshire Boys, was four down after four holes to compound the disappointment of losing his foursomes match.

However, he responded superbly to a few encouraging words from team manager Woodcock and pulled his game round to win one up.

In the final match Will Eardley (Pannal) had a tough battle against Sam Barker-Sabido (Tapton) and won the 312-yard par-4, having driven the green, to pull back to all square.

Eardley produced an excellent drive down the middle at the last while his opponent carved his drive out right into rough.

The mistake opened the way for Eardley to win the hole and the match, and he earned the applause of his watching team-mates who had gathered around the last green.
