Yorkshire golf: Shipley's Will Whiteoak unable to stave off onslaught of six birdies in eight holes

SHIPLEY'S Will Whiteoak took his week's tally to two and a half points as England A made it two wins out of two in the Costa Ballena quadrangular tournament, in Cadiz, Andalucia.

England A beat Germany 7-2, the same score by which they had vanquished Finland the previous day, and Whiteoak had appeared to be on his way to adding a singles win to his foursomes victory on Thursday.

However, after leading by two holes at the turn, and needing a birdie at the 10th to maintain the advantage, his opponent David Rauch hit him with a run of five birdies in six holes.

It meant Rauch, who had played eight holes in six under, won 2&1.

Yorkshire county player Whiteoak had partnered Durham's Andrew Wilson in the morning series, as he had on Wednesday, and the pair set their side on the way to a foursomes whitewash by defeating Rauch and Falko Hanisch.

"We were all square through eight and then we birdied nine, 10, 11 and 12 to go three up," said Whiteoak. "We were able to see the game out from there, 3&2."

England won the singles 4-2 to complete their 7-2 win while in the other match, featuring Spain and Finland - the sides who had both lost on day one - Spain emerged winners 5.5 to 3.5.

On Friday, Whiteoak and Wilson will again lead off for England in the match against Spain, facing Jordi Panes and Alex del Rey in the foursomes.

Whiteoak will play del Rey in the singles as England go for victory and a clean sweep in the event.
