Yorkshire golf: White Rose Boys involved in roller-coaster ride before tieing with Lancashire

But they were forced to settle for a 9-9 tie when they were unable to find a half point from any of their last three matches.

Their team manager Phil Woodcock said: “I was happy with the way the team played; we just let it slip in the morning with some bad putting and indecisive decisions."

Yorkshire Boys had trailed 4-2 after the morning session - played in rain that varied from light to heavy at times - and Woodcock added: "Having spoken to the team at lunch, they knew what they had to do and nearly pulled it off.

"I was missing some of our top players so overall I was pleased with the result.”

In the top foursomes match, Yorkshire captain Matty Raybould (Bridlington) and Charlie Daughtrey (Rotherham) won 3&1.

It gave false promise to the visitors and with Wakefield duo Dan Bradbury and George Heath not performing to their best, they lost by two holes having been one up with three to play.

Howley Hall's Tom North and Nathan Seal (Knaresborough) also lost on the last, by one hole, while Middlesbrough's James Swash and Michael Hay (Hunley Hall) went down 4&2 and Rotherham's Aaron Nairn and Hickleton's Luke Palmowski were beaten 3&2.

Two of Yorkshire's young players, Matty Roberts (Fulford) and Pannal's Will Eardley won convincingly, 5&3, to ensure there was not a chasm between the two sides going into the singles.

Daughtrey went out first in the afternoon and was two down after three holes against Ashton Under-Lyne's Luke Kelly, Lancashire's top player, but threw a cluster of birdies at his opponent and won 5&3.

Yorkshire were back to one point adrift only for Raybould and Roberts to suffer losses that meant the gap was three.

The remaining games were all close and a surge from Woodcock's line-up saw the match squared at 6-6.

Bradbury won one up, Swash could have closed his game out on the 17th, but also had to go to 18 to claim a one-hole win, as did Palmowski.

The match was evenly poised at 6-6 and North nudged Yorkshire ahead with a two-hole triumph..

Hay won by the same margin and Heath recorded a 5&3 victory meaning just half a point was required for an overall triumph for Yorkshire.

Unfortunately Nairn, Seal and Eardley were unable to oblige, and the match finished in a tie.
