Yorkshire golf: White Rose to have strong showing at England Golf's Gold Medal events

Eleven White Rose men qualified at the North of England regional final at Ilkley, led by event winner Scott Colquhoun (Hanging Heaton), and will play off for the title on Friday, August 12 at Frilford Heath during England Golf Week.

Joining Colquhoun will be Richard Seels (The Oaks), Matthew Ryder (Skipton), Brian Fisher (Pontefract & District), Clive Swiers (Ripon City), Peter Williams (Bridlington Links), Eric Welburn (Ganton), John Goodacre (Harrogate), Jonny Dunning (Malton & Norton), Mick Fisher and Neil Atkinson (both Romanby).

Colquhoun won with a net 71 off 10. He had 10 gross pars and won on count back from four other players. Seels placed second, just beaten by a shot by Colquhoun's inward 39.

Crow Nest Park's Veronica Whitehill and Toni-Louise Naylor, of Waterton Park, both shot net 76 while Selby's Susan Matchett carded a 78 to progress from the women's North of England regional final at Lancaster.

Twelve-handicapper Whitehill birdied her first two holes, and had two equal inward and outward halves of 44.

Naylor, who recently set a new ladies' course record of 70 at Waterton Park, birdied her last two holes to qualify. She had five birdies in all in her gross 79, including two in her first three holes.

Matchett, also off 12, overcame the setback of opening with a double bogey to play steady golf for her gross 86.

The women's national final will be staged at Frilford Heath on Thursday, August 11.

All the regional finalists had won a club medal during 2015. They will face qualifiers from three other regional finals at Golf Week, which is staged by England Golf to create a national grand finale for a host of handicap and team championships.
