A tie or a victory over Cumbria on Friday in their final match would see them regain the crown they lost so narrowly to their Red Rose rivals at Sandiway last year.

The foundations for an overwhelming win yesterday for Dawn Clegg’s team were put in place with a 3-0 result in the foursomes.

Megan Lockett (Huddersfield) and Rotherham’s Olivia Winning won one up, Selby’s Megan Garland and Rochelle Morris 3&2 and Hickleton’s Alison Knowles and Holly Morgan, of Hallamshire, 6&4.

Morris, Winning, Knowles, Lockett and Morgan all won their singles while Garland battled back defiantly from five down only to lose at the last.

Durham defeated Cheshire 5-4 while Cumbria and Northumberland tied 4.5-4.5.

Yorkshire could even win the title should they lose today, since they have an eight-point games-won advantage over Lancashire, the only side who can deny them.

Just two wins within Friday's set of nine matches would be sufficient, but Clegg can be assured that her team will be intent on claiming the crown with a perfect five out of five match record as they go up against opponents whose half point yesterday ended a run of three consecutive losses.

Should they win the championship, Yorkshire will go on to represent the region in the England Golf county finals at Waterlooville, in Hampshire, in September.
