Yorkshire golf: Woodsome Hall's Chris Hanson claims second top-10 finish as Wu Ashun wins Lyoness Open

Thirty-year-old Hanson carded a final-round two-under-par 70 to finish on six-under 282 in Atzenbrugg.

The Huddersfield player had qualified for the weekend’s play with rounds of 71 74 and had climbed the leader board on Saturday with a six-birdie 67.

Leeds’s Daniel Gavins tied 59th after scores of 72 74 74 72.

Hanson earned €15,800 for his week’s work at the Diamond Country Club and Gavins €2,750.

“It was fun out there, I played really nice,” said Hanson, who, when asked if the wet conditions favoured him since he is used to inclement weather, joked: “Not when I hate the rain.”

But he added: “It was great to post another top 10. If I keep preparing each week like I am more good results will follow.”

After a birdie at the first hole on Sunday, Hanson gave the shot back at the fifth, but a second birdie at eight had him out in one-under-par 35.

He got his inward nine off to a good start, too, by birdieing the 10th and had another at the 13th, but sandwiched it with bogeys at 12 and 14.

However, an eagle three followed at the 600-yard par-5 next and even a fourth bogey of the day, at 17, could not deny him his second top-10 finish in his first year on the European Tour.

Wu claimed his second European Tour title after a roller-coaster final round of 69 to finish 13 under par and a shot ahead of playing partner Adrian Otaegui, with England’s Richard McEvoy equalling the best finish of his career in third.

After starting the day a shot behind South Africa’s Zander Lombard, Wu surged into a three-shot lead thanks to five birdies and a bogey in a front nine of 32.

However, that lead lasted just two holes as the world No 222 found water with his approach to the 10th to card a double bogey and then bogeyed the 11th after failing to get up and down from a greenside bunker.

That left him tied with McEvoy and Otaegui on 11 under, before McEvoy took full advantage of the tee being brought forward on the 13th by driving the green on the 281-yard par-4 to set up a two-putt birdie.

The final group of Wu, Otaegui and Lombard all opted to play safe on the same hole, but Wu pitched to eight feet and holed for birdie to join McEvoy on 12 under, with Lombard converting from twice the distance to reach 11 under.

Wu regained the outright lead with a birdie on the par-5 15th, where his approach almost span back into the hole, but Otaegui birdied the same hole and also the 16th to join his playing partner on 13 under.

However, Otaegui then failed to save par from short of the 17th green and with McEvoy dropping his only shot of the day on the 18th, Wu was left with a one-shot lead with one hole to play and safely made par after Otaegui narrowly missed his birdie attempt.
