Yorkshire golf: York make it two out of two with fine YIDU win at Teesside

Despite being without York Amateur champion Jamie Miller, Martin Brown and Damon Coulson, they produced a superb performance to prevail at Seaton Carew.

Tied at 6-6 after the morning foursomes, York pressed hard in the singles and a 15-9 outcome in their favour in the afternon series saw them make it two from two.

Neil Bellamy, York Union of Golf Clubs’ president, said: “This is a fantastic result. All the players here performed extremely well. We keep the memory alive of Russ Chilton (former captain, who died suddenly this year) and the team continue to keep playing for him.

“They played out their skins. We had a debutant, Ciaran Matthews, who won his singles match, and all the team performed really solidly. It was a great performance from everybody.

“I think this a bigger result than our victory over Sheffield purely because we had some inexperienced players turning out for us, but they rose to the occasion superbly. This is a big boost for us to go on and win the league.”

James Cass (Fulford) and Malton & Norton’s David Hague got the foursomes off to a bright start for the visitors with a 4&2 victory over Tom Smith and Adam Bates.

Ben Plaxton (Fulford) and James Walsh (Malton & Norton) secured a 3&2 success over Llloyde Bond and James Rogers (Eaglescliffe), and Sandburn Hall duo Rob Heath and Will Adamson returned the third away victory, seeing off Cameron Wallace and Lewis Wharton.

However, the scores were tied at the half-way mark, so York - the 2014 champions - front-loaded their singles order in an attempt to get off to a strong start.

Hague had to settle for a half with Eaglescliffe’s Tom Smith, but Cass defeated Rogers 4&3.

Walsh and Plaxton were unable to supplement their morning win, but Oliver Adamson (Pike Hills) was an emphatic 7&6 victor over Blackwell Grange’s Adam Bates.

When Chris Lone (York) added another half and Ciaran Matthews (Fulford) and Adamson won, York had the upper hand.

Heath was three up with six to play, but found himself one down standing on the 17th against Ryan Elliott. He recovered his equilibrium to win the final two holes and grab a vital win.

When The Oaks’ Sam Wilkinson beat Will Skipp (Eaglescliffe) 2&1 and Ben Statters (Easingwold) managed a half with Lewis Wharton (Eaglescliffe), York’s second win in as many matches was secured.
