Yorkshire quartet head for Sweden

Athletics: Four Yorkshire athletes have been named in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg next month.

Leeds’s Richard Strachan is one of three Britons entered in the individual 400m. The 26-year-old has begun the indoor season in good form and finished fifth in the final in Paris two years ago.

He is also in the squad for the 4x400m alongside York’s Richard Buck, who medalled in both the individual and relay in the French capital in 2011.

Sheffield’s Mukhtar Mohammed, 22, is ranked No 2 in Europe this season over 800m and is a genuine medal contender in Sweden. Middlesbrough’s Chris Tomlinson, 31, who was a silver medallist at the world indoors five years ago, goes for gold in the long jump.

Dwain Chambers has been included despite failing to impress on his return from a back problem. Chambers was unable to compete in the trials in Sheffield before managing fifth on his comeback to the 60m at last weekend’s British Athletics Grand Prix.

The 34-year-old, who won silver in Paris, admitted afterwards he did not want to go to the championships – which run from March 1-3 – if he was not fully fit.

But he has been given the green light to join head coach Peter Eriksson’s team, which will be captained by Jenny Meadows.

Meadows only returned to action after 16 months out in Birmingham at the weekend, but is selected to defend her 800m crown after going under the qualifying mark.

Eriksson said: “I have been really encouraged by the performances so far by the team in 2013, and I’m sure this will continue at the European Indoors. Jenny has shown that she is a very strong character, with great leadership qualities and experience on this stage – she will be a great captain for the GB & NI team.”
