Yorkshire riders so close to trial victory

Three local time trial riders came within a whisker of being crowned National 100-Mile Team Champions after a thrilling title race in Norfolk yesterday.

The Team Swift-Allsports trio of Joel Wainman from Hull, Andy Jackson from Holmfirth and Brian Walker finished as second-best team in the title race over a gruelling course based near Morley.

They finished seventh, eighth and ninth in the title race. But they were beaten to the team prize by Team Pedal Revolution, who were 2-58 faster on aggregate with their riders having crossed the line third, fifth and 19th.

The event was won by prolific national champion Michael Hutchinson on In Gear-Quickvit, whose time of 3:23:04 was almost 15 minutes faster than his nearest rival. His time was just 19 seconds short of breaking the national record.

The Norfolk event also included the Trike Association 100-mile time trial, and Yorkshire Road Club's Carl Saint won that event, clocking 4:10:53 for the distance to win by more than 11 minutes from his nearest rival.

Elsewhere, Malton Wheelers' Charles Goodway finished third in the Stockton Wheelers' 25-mile event at Crathorne in North Yorkshire.

Newcastle's John Tuckett (Activ Cycles) was fastest with 52:06, while Chris Isats (Berwick Wheelers) was just four seconds quicker than Goodway.

And other Yorkshire riders who turned in impressive performances included Otley CC's Ged Millward who was sixth with 55:43, as well as Sheffield rider Steven Hollowood who clocked 56:10 for seventh.
