Yorkshire v Warwicks Day 2: Rashid gains Headingley advantage

Ian Westwood and Darren Maddy featured in Warwickshire's best opening stand in over two years after Yorkshire had been bowled out for 425 on the second day of the LV= County Championship match at Headingley Carnegie today.

They put on 102 together before both fell in consecutive overs and Yorkshire went on to seize the initiative to leave their opponents on 221 for seven at the close and still trailing by 204 runs.

Yorkshire found themselves in the field soon after lunch and hopes of making early inroads were quickly dashed as Westwood and Maddy settled in confidently, with Westwood adopting the more positive approach.

When the score had reached 29 it was Warwickshire's highest for the first wicket in their last 11 innings and Westwood progressed so smoothly that he completed his 50 out of 66, striking nine fours.

It became a century stand in the 27th over but the breakthrough came when Maddy fell lbw to Oliver Hannon-Dalby for 35.

In the next over, from Adil Rashid, a similar dismissal spelled the end for Westwood who had made 66 off 95 deliveries with 11 boundaries.

Ant Botha and Jim Troughton survived for a while after tea but the game suddenly swung Yorkshire's way as three wickets went down in 10 balls for the addition of five runs to leave Warwickshire struggling on 153 for five.

Rashid had both Troughton and Botha smartly pocketed at short leg by Adam Lyth and in between these dismissals Ateeq Javed was lbw to Steve Patterson.

Tim Ambrose and Rikki Clarke took Warwickshire to 186 for five before there was a break for rain and Tino Best came on soon after the resumption and in his first over hit Ambrose's middle stump.

The return of Rashid brought him his fourth wicket as Steffan Piolet became another lbw victim but Clarke and Neil Carter denied Yorkshire any further successes.

Gerard Brophy had been on 92 and Rashid 29 when Yorkshire resumed in the morning on 325 for four, and Rashid was lbw to the second ball from Carter who thoroughly deserved his final haul of four for 87.

It did not take Brophy long to complete his second first-class century for Yorkshire but he then cut Clarke straight into Botha's hands at point for 103 from 175 balls with 15 fours.

The best of the remainder of the batting came from Richard Pyrah who managed to hold his concentration despite feeling unwell and having to receive attention on several occasions.

He finished unbeaten on 45 but nobody was able to stay with him for long, Azeem Rafiq steering Clarke to Piolet at gully and Patterson being run out by a direct hit from Piolet.

Best was also caught by Piolet soon after lunch to bring Boyd Rankin his only wicket and the innings was wound up by Imran Tahir who had Hannon-Dalby caught by Westwood.
