Youth Olympics: Harrogate teenager Milne advances into Olympic quarter-finals

SARAH Milne might have cruised through to the Youth Olympic Games quarter-finals but the Harrogate badminton ace insists the competition will be anything but plain sailing from here on in.

Milne has been in imperious form in the Lion City, winning all three of her group matches without dropping a set.

The 18-year-old secured her last-eight spot by beating Alexandra Mathis 21-11 21-10.

That set up a showdown with Josephine Wentholt from Holland today after the unfancied Dutch player knocked out the tournament's No 1 seed Misaki Matsutomo from Japan.

But despite admitting her delight to see Matsutomo leave the tournament Milne insists she will not be counting her chickens.

"I had a reasonable draw but I never looked any further ahead than the next game because I had lost to the French girl I played in the groups before," said Milne. "The Dutch girl is very tall and will get really good angle which makes it quite difficult for me.

"But it doesn't matter who I played really, I need to make sure I am playing my best and then hopefully I can get myself to where I want to be and that is challenging for medals."

Sheffield swimmer Ellie Faulkner was quick to take the positives out of her first action at the Youth Olympics despite failing to make it out of her 100m freestyle heats.

With her favoured 400m freestyle to come later in the week, the 17-year-old European Junior Championship gold medalist insisted her 100m experience was only ever going to be a fact-finding mission.

"The 400m is more of a priority for me and it was really nice to get in the water and get a swim in and hopefully now I won't be as rusty for the other swims," said Faulkner.
