Zara to marry rugby star in July

Zara Phillips and Yorkshire-born international rugby star Mike Tindall are to marry in Edinburgh in the summer, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

The Queen’s granddaughter and her fiancé will wed at the historic Canongate Kirk, on the Royal Mile, on July 30.

The couple announced their engagement in December, just weeks after Prince William and Kate Middleton revealed that they planned to get married at the end of April.

Tindall, who is captain of the England rugby union team, has been capped more than 60 times by his country and was part of the England team that won the 2003 World Cup.

Born in Otley, he attended Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield, and now plays for club side Gloucester.

Miss Phillips, who is 12th in line to the throne, has achieved sporting success in her own right, winning an individual gold medal in three-day eventing at the World Equestrian Games in 2006.

She went on to become BBC Sports Personality of the Year later that year.

She was following in the footsteps of her mother, Princess Anne, who won the award in 1971.

The couple met in a Sydney bar during the 2003 World Cup through Miss Phillips’s cousin Prince Harry.

Their friendship blossomed and Tindall, 32, has claimed it was his “pure charm” that won the Royal’s heart.

Iain Balshaw, who was also part of England’s rugby World Cup-winning squad, is reported to be Tindall’s best man.

Holding the wedding in Scotland was widely expected as the Queen will be at her private Balmoral estate in the country – the traditional venue for her summer break.

Buckingham Palace said the couple will hold their reception at Edinburgh’s Palace of Holyroodhouse – the Queen’s official home in the country.
