Zondo’s double sinks the YMCA

Yorkshire One: Bridlington maintained their four-point lead over neighbours Driffield when they ran out 23-12 home winners over Huddersfield YMCA.

Bridlington went 10-0 ahead in the first half when Regan Stirk kicked a penalty and then converted a try by full-back Sizwe Zondo.

The visitors pulled back a try by No 8 Mark Whitehead, converted by James Swift, but Bridlington then restored their previous margin with Stirk’s second penalty and another try by Zondo which Stirk converted.

Whitehead touched down for his second try for YMCA but Stirk added a third penalty in the dying minutes.

Driffield, held to a draw at Huddersfield YMCA the previous week, returned to winning ways with a 22-15 home verdict against North Ribblesdale, whose losing bonus put them level with YMCA on league points.

Third-placed Pocklington pulled clear of their rivals with a 17-11 home win over Keighley.

Keighley took an early lead with a penalty by Alex Brown but Pocklington were 14-3 ahead midway through the first half with tries from scrum-half Ben Rees and captain and prop Matt Webber, both converted by Nick Bennett.

There was no further score until 10 minutes from the end when Brown and Bennett exchanged penalties, and, as the game went into stoppage time – and with Webber yellow-carded – Keighley pressure was rewarded with a try by hooker Will Armitage.

Heath moved level with Dinnington on league points when they ran in seven tries in a 47-14 home victory over Dinnington.

Full-back Ben Mitchell scored twice and there was another for promosing new stand-off Ezra Hinchliffe. Ben Mitchell converted six out of seven.

Yorkshire Two: Barnsley extended their lead with a 42-20 home victory over West Leeds.

There were two tries each for No 8 David Reed and second-row Jordan Wood, and Patrick Jensen kicked two penalties and three conversions.

With the match between second and third-placed clubs Leodiensian and Wath on Dearne postponed, Bradford Salem moved up with a 41-3 home win over Ripon.

Selby moved ahead of their rivals when they scored three tries to one but were left to scrape a 20-19 home win over Hullensians.

Two penalties by stand-off Jamie Gill gave the visitors a 6-0 half-time lead, but opposite number Iain Adamson pulled back a penalty for Selby and then converted a try by prop Duncan Hardy.

Gill kicked a third penalty and then converted when Hull full-back Chris Smith scored from an interception which had started five metres from their own line. Full-back Ben Lunt scored Selby’s next try but Gill’s fourth penalty kept the visitors in front until replacement No 8 Ben Booth touched down for Selby’s winning try in the dying seconds.

Doncaster Phoenix moved level with Hullensians on league points when they ran in five tries in a 35-10 home win over Skipton.

Skipton had taken an early lead at 7-3 with the first try of the game, but Phoenix forced their way into a 20-10 lead by half-time.

Yorkshire Three: Roundhegians consolidated their lead with a six-try display in their 38-0 win at struggling neighbours Old Modernians.

The result put Modernians down to bottom place as Halifax Vandals moved up two places with a slender 19-17 win at Hessle.

Second-placed Sheffield Medicals had their home match against Bramley Phoenix postponed because of ground conditions, and Rotherham Phoenix moved back to within a point when they scored a 32-23 home win over Old Rishworthians.

Phoenix had opened with a try by centre Owen Swift after just 30 seconds and a penalty by Tom Jenkinson two minutes later, but Rishworthians were 17-8 up midway through the first half with tries from No 8 Matt Tyson and right winger Lee Atkinson.

Burley moved up to fourth place with a 30-10 home win over Thornensians.

Scrum-half John Thistlethwate, flanker Richard Christie, winger James Langtree and replacement stand-off Tim Betts scored tries for Burley, giving them a bonus which moved them one point ahead of Baildon, who were 17-6 winners at Aireborough.
