NOW that the Covid vaccination rollout is successfully under
way and Brexit completed, I wonder if the Government is going to re-focus business on other national imperatives such as planning?

Having responded to the two consultation documents last year, namely ‘Planning for the Future’ and ‘Changes to the Current Planning System’, I hope that they will look at the scandal of the large number of homes being built in flood-risk areas on flood plains.

The effects of climate change are escalating. In the North, as was predicted, we are having wetter winters, and in my local town of Mirfield in the Calder Valley, flooding events are becoming more and more frequent.

It is therefore surprising that Kirklees Council seem hell-bent on approving the building of 67 houses on the flood plain. Locals have been fighting this for almost two years and the application has been approved once, brought back to committee and deferred twice.

It is clear something is seriously wrong. Too many councils are paying lip service to climate change, but we must make a stand against the ludicrous destruction of flood plains.
