Whitby’s much-loved Board Inn has a new team at the helm, led by its former chef Matthew Burrows

Matthew, who took over the popular pub on Church Street with wife Laura shortly before Christmas, is passionate about cooking delicious meals from scratch and can’t wait to share his new menu with customers.

“We’re really excited about taking over the pub – it’s our first pub venture and people have been really supportive,” he says.

A chef for more than 20 years, Matthew is working on a menu of simple but tasty pub classics using the best local ingredients.

Starters include homemade soup with warm crusty bread, prawn cocktail or southern-style chicken goujons with a garlic dip.

Special dishes include juicy pan-fried pork chops with bubble and squeak, lamb’s liver with creamy mash and onion gravy, or locally sourced sausages and mashed potato in a giant Yorkshire pudding.

Matthew's homemade pasta with a rich bolognaise sauce, topped with cheese and served with garlic bread, has already been a big hit during January, as has the butcher's steak pie, served with a choice of chips, new potatoes or mashed potato and peas.

Curry fans will love the home-cooked chicken balti or beef madras, as well as vegetable curry; all come with pilau rice or chips and garlic and coriander naan bread.

Fish and chips also feature, with options including cod, haddock and Whitby scampi, while vegetarians can enjoy an appetising broccoli and cheese bake, or vegetarian chilli with rice and garlic bread.

If you're craving a burger, the Board Inn version comes with chips, onion rings and coleslaw or, for those looking for something lighter, Matthew can rustle up a baguette or sandwich with fillings including ham, Cheddar cheese, egg mayonnaise, tuna, prawns or coronation chicken.

And if you're dining with little ones, the children's menu includes all their favourites: sausages, fish fingers, chicken nuggets and Whitby scampi, with a choice of chips, mash or new potatoes as well as garden or mushy peas, or beans.

“All our food is fresh, filling and really tasty, and the response from customers has already been amazing,” adds Matthew.

“I’m working on some new additions to the menu so we should have another 10 dishes on the menu by early February, and there really will be something for everyone.”
