Beauty: Celebrity tips to stop the colour fade

Celebrity hairdresser Mark Hill says condition is key to keeping spring's new hair colours vibrant. Stephanie Smith finds out how.

There are some striking new hair looks trending this spring, but before you dive head-first, it’s worth considering the downfalls. Celebrity hairdresser Mark Hill, who is based in Kirk Ella near Hull, has the following advice:

The ombre trend – Mark says: “Ombre is a great way to add colour without having to pop back to the salon every few weeks for a root touch up. What started as a gentle sunkissed effect has now become more dramatic.

“When your hair is dark, the only way you can achieve such a dramatic result is by using bleach and toners. Stripping colour from hair so dramatically can make hair weak, brittle, dry or damaged.

“Use your normal conditioner every time you shampoo but once a week pop a conditioning treatment onto the mid-length and ends. The pastels trend – Mark says: “The trend for funky colours has been embraced by every age from Helen Mirren to Katy Perry. Icy blue and pretty pink, steely grey and funky purple, why not have fun with your hair?

“Your hairdresser might recommend pre-colouring first so the tones show brighter. Pre-colouring means using a bleach or hair lightening product. No matter how gentle these products are, they are ultimately changing the way your hair looks and feels.

“The second problem is colour fade. The pastel may look amazing when first done, but after a couple of shampoos, it’s barely there.
