Brewery's investment will preserve one of Yorkshire's landmarks

The STRIKING sign on one of the most well known brewery sites in Yorkshire is set to undergo a £325,000 renovation to ensure it lights up the Leeds skyline for many years to come as visitor figures exceed expectation.

Neon letters reading ‘The Home of Tetley’s Established 1822’ have adorned the top of the former brewery HQ since it was built in 1931, but some are in need of repair so Carlsberg is funding repairs to the roof and the commissioning of a traditional and bespoke hand-made replica sign.

Works start on Monday with the site owners saying they are committed to preserving the Art Deco building for its current use as an art space.

Bruce Ray, Carlsberg UK corporate affairs director, said: “We’re proud of our commitment to maintaining The Tetley as an iconic building. In its current use as a community art space we’re seeing thousands of local people flocking through its doors each year. As such, we’re happy to invest to ensure the building is well maintained and the bright neon letters once again shine brightly across the city.”

It comes as The Tetley revealed visitor figures for its first three years far exceeded the expectation of 100,000 with more than 367, 000 people stepping through the door to date.

Opening in December 2013, the first month saw 11,520
visitors alone. In 2014 there
were 107, 535, in 2015 there were 113, 770 and 125, 674 last year. So far this year there have been 15, 794.

Martin Hamilton, director of Leeds Civic Trust said: “The Tetley is a landmark historical building and a gallery with a growing reputation. Maintaining the fabric and iconic signage is something we are keen to support.”
