Casting call for artists for next year's open studios

ARTISTS and craftspeople from across York are invited to apply for next year's York Open Studies.

Since 2001, artists have opened up their studios and workshops for two weekends in April so that visitors can discover art in a range of spaces rarely open to the public, from town houses to cottage workshops and adapted garden sheds, historic buildings, colleges and community spaces.

In all of them the makers themselves can be found ready to show their work in person.

Jewellery designer and maker Jo Bagshaw, who works from her home in Heslington, has taken part five times since 2006 and this year joined the organising committee.

She said the event was the chance for artists to be discovered by a new audience.

“I found taking part invaluable,” Ms Bagshaw said. “It gives the public access to what is going on in their area and meet the people being the designs.”

An accessible studio space is not always essential as artists can, like Ms Bagshaw has in the past, join together at venues especially for the weekends to take part.

The deadline for applications is September 12. To submit visit www.yorkopenstudios.co.uk
