The immunity of York from serious crime

April 4, 1922

In charging the Grand Jury at York yesterday, Recorder, Sir Herbert Nield, KC, MP, congratulated the city on its continued immunity from serious crime, and the progressive diminution of intemperance.

Mentioning that of the 27 persons proceeded against for drunkenness in the last quarter, twelve were non-residents, he said he thought it desirable to have the analysis made because York was a place to which people were attracted for various reasons.

If visitors were indiscreet and got into trouble on account of their intemperate habits, it was a shame that the city should bear the reproach.

As regards the increases in charges of larceny, he remarked that it might be this was merely a passing phase; at least he hoped so.
