Whilst returning from a dance at Dinnington, near Rotherham, in the early hours of yesterday, a private motor-bus owned by a Maltby newsagent, overturned. One the 17 passengers was killed and four were injured.

The bus, which is believed to have struck some obstacle in the road, turned completely over, and all the occupants were trapped. Harriet Tamplin, aged 22, domestic servant, of Braithwell, near Rotherham, was killed.

The injured were; Samuel Albert Sarple, the driver, who is a nephew of the owner of the vehicle (Albert Bridgeway, of Maltby); Arthur Shakespeare, aged 16, of 9, Salisbury Road, Maltby; Arthur Fletcher, aged 18, of Rotherham Road, Maltby; and James Barker, aged 25, of Clarence Road, Maltby. Their injuries consisted of cuts, bruises, and shock, but were not serious.

Dr W.L. Dibbs, of Bramley, near Rotherham, was summoned, along with the Rotherham Police Ambulance, and, after first aid had been rendered, the injured were removed to Rotherham Hospital.

Interviewed after the accident, the driver said: “I think we must have struck something in the road, and the bus swerved and turned a somersault. I scrambled out in the pitch darkness, and immediately turned off the petrol to prevent fire. All the passengers were in a heap inside the bus. I did all I could to get them out, and summoned assistance.”
