Fire Watching: Compulsion Likely in Huddersfield

Huddersfield A.R.P. Emergency Committee is to meet on Friday to consider the position regarding firewatchers at business premises the town.

Three weeks ago the Town Council appealed tor volunteers act as firewatchers at business premises where it had not been possible to make satisfactory arrangements, and it was then stated that if sufficient volunteers were not forthcoming application would be made for compulsory powers.

It seems almost certain that such powers will be sought, for the response to the appeal is said to have been “practically negligible.”

If an order is made, registration will follow, and men between 18 and 60 years of age. who are not putting in 48 hours a month as fire-watchers at the premises where they work or as civil defence workers or are not otherwise exempt, will be liable for duty.
