Flying bomb damage in the North

The North’s only raid from flying bombs on a morning at Christmas time was widespread, but many fell in open country.

The Germans claimed Manchester as the target but in fact only one flying bomb fell there.

Several were seen passing over Sheffield, Wakefield and Gainsborough.

Only a few fell in Yorkshire. At Rossington telephone wires were hit. Other bombs fell at Sowerby Bridge, Willerby, near Hull, Barmby Moor, near Pocklington: and at Grange Moor, near Dewsbury. where a few people were Injured and 120 houses had windows shattered by blast.

The worst incident was at Oldham, where a row of houses was demolished and several people killed.

There were also casualties and damage at Stockport and Hyde in Cheshire and at Tottington, Worsley and Radcliffe Lancashire. One bomb fell the moors near Buxton, and at Bcighton, near Sheffield windows were broken but no one was hurt.
