One hundred members of the Halifax Licensed Victuallers’ Association have agreed that public houses shall close Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week and from Friday onwards, houses shall open from noon to and from 8 p.m.
Mr. W, H. Garfitt, secretary of the Association, says: “Our aim is to obviate the flocking of people from one public house to another and the terrific congestion in those that are open. If this is avoided, trade can kept a reasonable level.”

Hide AdIt is pointed out that the arrangement is not a hard and fast one and that if a licensee is in a position to extend his hours of opening he is at liberty to do so.
At Sowerby Bridge, a few miles away, an attempt to produce a similar co-ordinated scheme has failed. As the members of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association there cannot agree, the houses will continue to be open as long as there anything to sell.
