On this day in Yorkshire 1952

“Yorkshire can produce fruit and vegetables as efficiently as any other county.” said Mr. R. Humphrey, chairman of the Yorkshire area horticultural committee of the National Farmers’ Union, addressing Cleckheaton Rotary Club yesterday.

Mr. Humphrey said there were 150,000 people employed in the Industry on 50,000 holdings, and Yorkshire’s crops needed 7,000,000 sq. ft. of glass.

The East Riding alone had 5,500,000 sq. ft. The West Riding produced 275 acres of lettuce every year, 414 acres of brussels sprouts, 980 acres of carrots and nearly 2,000 acres of cauliflowers.

There were 98 acres of strawberries this year and 63 acres of raspberries.

Growers had long maintained that the fruit content of jam should be substantially increased. So far little headway had been made.
