On this day in Yorkshire 1965

One of the strictest orders of Roman Catholic nuns, who go about barefoot and hardly ever speak, threw open the doors of their convent in Lawrence Street, York, to the public today.

For five hours this afternoon and early evening strangers were being shown round St. Joseph’s Convent by the Poor Clares, celebrating the centenary of the founding of their convent.

Earlier the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of york, Ald. and Mrs. William Bridge attended a special Pontifical High Mass at the chapel.

It was the first time in 100 years that strangers had been allowed into the inner parts of the convent, which is surrounded by a 20ft. high wall.

Yorkshire Horseback Author Rides On

A message received in London today from Mr. William Holt, the 67 year old Yorkshire weaver turned author who is making a 10,000 mile horseback trip through Europe - a trip which started last August - reported that a temporary hold up at the Austrian border, because he lacked apermit for his horse Trigger, has now been overcome.

According to his latest message from Weilhein in Bavaria, Mr. Holt is making for the Black Forest.
