Gig review: The Last Shadow Puppets at Sheffield City Hall

With an eight year wait between their debut, The Age of the Understatement, and their latest release, Everything You've Come to Expect, it is fair to say that the anticipation within the grand setting of Sheffield's city hall on Sunday evening was difficult to put into words.

Strutting onto stage with a new track, Aviation, both the local lad, Alex Turner and the other half of duo, Mile Kane look at home on stage, finally playing live again. With a quick “Hello, Sheffield, thanks for coming down.”

The pair keep conversation to a minimum, instead they charge through a good mix of old and new tracks such as, Used to Be My Girl, Calm Like You and The Chamber.

With Arctic Monkeys frontman Turner’s usual crowds selling out Sheffield’s arena in just minutes, he decides to take advantage of the intimacy of the venue and jumps down from the stage to take a short walk with his fans while singing new track: The Dream Synopsis. The lyrics “And a wicked gale came howling up through, Sheffield city centre” are shouted back to Turner by the ecstatic, home crowd.

Returning back to stage, the pair take it down a notch with My Mistakes Were Made For You, but soon ramp up the energy again when the frantic sounds of the drums and guitars mark the intro of Only The Truth.

The next song though is a moment for Miles Kane – Bad Habits is a crowd favourite and sees Kane charging about the stage, while Turner brandishes a tambourine to the crowd.

Making their way through a mix of old and new tracks, In My Room makes way for a short encore break for the duo. Soon returning to stage, the pair treat the crowd to an excellent cover of I Want You (She’s So Heavy) by The Beatles, this track really sees Kane come into his own.

Coming to the end of their set, the pair end on the track everyone has be waiting for, with the whole venue on their feet, the pair play old favourite Standing Next To Me.

Then a quick goodbye and “We’ll see you very soon, Sheffield.”

We’ll just have to wait and see what the unpredictable duo have up their sleeves.
