Gig review: Olly Murs at First Direct Arena, Leeds

Pop world’s Mr Nice Guy celebrates a sell out dual night show in Leeds, sewing his acclaim to the sash of entertainments list of all round male entertainers.

It looks absolutely packed at the arena, predictably full of groups of girls and grans with the odd unusual smattering of husbands tagging along, donning the standard flashing light bunny ears.

The one thing you’re pretty much going to get at a pop gig is a well produced and set up stage show and 32-year-old Murs doesn’t fail to deliver.

He descends from behind two massive TV screens to wails and screams from the best part of 13,500 people, a noise that will keep my tinnitus ringing for the next couple of days.

Entering with chart smash ‘You Don’t Know Love’, the mega hits machine rolls out with ‘Unpredictable’, ‘Grow up’, ‘Up’ and ‘Heart Skips a Beat’ along with a many other fan favourites.

His constant audience interaction keeps the steady crowd octaves at an unfathomable pitch; he also does the standard crowd stroll and hugs the odd small child or two.

After his pop medley of disco hits which have everyone up dancing he predictably ends with the surefire crowd pleasers ‘Trouble Maker’, ‘Kiss Me’ and ‘Years and Years’.

For a guy of relative youthful age he has certainly learned the tricks of the trade well. As we make our way out of the arena there’s the odd tearful eye and staggering fan giving their own personal encore of Murs hits, I suppose a testament to the legend this guy has become.
