Music preview: Hot Dub Time Machine at O2 Academy Leeds

Celebrating 50 years of music in three hours, hosts DJ Tom Loud and LuLu Loud will take sell out crowds on a musical time journey. Starting in 1954, Hot Dub Time Machine plays a track from each year in chronicle order until present day.

Having played Hogmanay and five sell out shows in Edinburgh, the much hyped show has finally reached the UK for a full tour, including sell out London shows.

With incredible visuals on massive screens, confetti cannons and gigantic balloons, crowds are going crazy for what they call The Best Party Ever.

Hot Dub Time Machine will be heading to the O2 Academy Leeds on Saturday October 1.

Tom loud told the Yorkshire Evening Post about the event.

How did you come up with the idea of Hot Dub Time Machine?

I’d been DJing for a few years an saw a gap in the market to do something really unique with music and that would, I hoped, make people happy! Someone once tweeted after a gig that Hot Dub was ‘the best party ever’ which is probably the best praise I could have been given!

Your songs are played in strict chronological order, which year gets the best reaction from the crowd?

They all do! Hot Dub is about proving there is no golden age of music, there is great music made all the time. It’s all about choice and context.

If Hot Dub hadn’t become so successful what would you be doing now?


I used to be a sound designer on TV and film, so I’d probably still be doing that job but dreaming of being a DJ. Which is exactly what I did for ten years before Hot Dub!

What is your favourite track of all time?

My favourite song is Hallelujah, the Jeff Buckley version, but it’s tough to rock a party with it.

What are your musical influences?

To be honest, I’m influenced by every band and DJ I ever see. If they’re good, I try to be like them, if they ignore the crowd, look bored and uninterested, I try to do the opposite.

What’s on your Hot Dub Rider?

Usually some Red Bull and an alcohol mixer. And a tray of cold meats…for some reason!

Do your mates always ask you to play for free at their birthdays?

It depends, most of my close friends got dragged along to the tiny, rubbish gigs when I first started, so they’re sick of me DJing!

When was the point you thought, “I’ve got a really good idea, here!”

When I realised that people came to Hot Dub and danced like lunatics and seemed to be euphoric in a way I’d never seen before.

Tell us about the show, what sort of visuals can we expect to see?

Visuals are the key part of the Hot Dub experience. It’s an enveloping audio-visual journey with every song have its own visual style. There is also a virtual cabin attendant and time lord, Lulu Loud, who appears on screen to guide everyone through the journey. 



Does it vary country to country? What goes downhill in Holland but works perfectly in New York?

It does! Although I’ll do that the other way around, We Like To Party by the Venga Press goes great in Holland but is a disaster in the USA.

Have you ever had any celeb ravers at your shows?

Yep, particularly in Edinburgh. The Hoff came along once a few years ago! And at Halloween someone tried to convince me that Lewis Hamilton was there, but I think she was having a laugh!
