Music preview: Matthias Tanzmann at The Church, Leeds

What inspired you to create your latest album? Where did you write the majority of it?

I have been collecting ideas for the album for a couple of years. It was mainly fragments that referred to my musical beginnings that reach back into the late Nineties. From last winter until spring 2016 I have spend a lot of time at my studio and worked on those musical scribbles as well as writing new tracks.

How did your time spent in South America and Thailand influence your songwriting in both process and outcomes?

I have been field recording and sitting down trying to catch the laid back atmosphere when I was in those places. Tamarind and Fireworks On The Roof have their origin in those Tropical surroundings.

Tell us your top three tracks/artists that you have taken inspiration from in order to create Momentum.

I was referring to the deep house sound of the late Nineties and early 2000s. I didn’t have certain artists and productions in mind, it was more the sound that has inspired me at that time that I wanted to enhance into a contemporary context.

Although this time round you will be playing Cave Rave what has been your most memorable DJ set when playing for Back 2 Basics and why?

I have had great times at Back 2 Basics. My first gig ever in Leeds was with Dave Beer and Basics. I am happy to have been on board during the history of this institution.

Is there anything different/exciting we should expect to hear from you for your set at The Church in Leeds for Cave Rave?

I will be presenting some tracks from my album as well as the first so far unreleased remixes to those tracks that are supposed to be out early next year. And I’ll be bringing some new music from befriended artists as I will flying in straight from Amsterdam Dance Event.

What top tips would you give to young producers who are wanting to move into producing deep and tech house?

Try to sound original and work hard to be really good. Avoid presets and sample kits.

Is there any place in the world/festival/event you have always wanted to play at that is yet to happen?

Luckily I have managed to have played at most places I dreamed of. In my early days it was Tresor in Berlin, later clubs like fabric London or Womb Tokyo. Now I am looking forward to discover new clubs and festivals. There are always nice surprises.

Is there an event you are looking forward to play the most on your tour? And why?

I just finished the South America leg of the tour which has been amazing. North America is coming up early in November and after a few gigs in Europe I will go to Australia in the end of the month. I am very much looking forward to that as I have’t been there in three years.

The opening of Church has proved to be a huge success for Dave Beer and Back 2 Basics, what do you think should be the next thing for B2B to do in order to carry on their legacy?

I am sure Dave knows exactly what will be best for Back 2 Basics. I am confident we will see more exciting things in the future.

Are you able to drop us a hint for anything coming up for you in 2017 that we should look out for?

After the Momentum album tour and the remixes I will be focussing on my project Better Lost Than Stupid together with Martin Buttrich and Davide Squillace. We have been working on music a lot recently. 2017 will be the year of our first releases.
