We celebrate the Great Yorkshire Show with a competition search for the event's best-dressed visitor, exhibititor or competitor, to win a lovely pampering prize for two at John Lewis Leeds. Stephanie Smith explains all.

The greatest catwalk in Yorkshire is not, as you might expect, to be found somewhere in the most fashionable shopping quarters of Leeds, but at the annual Great Yorkshire Show, which takes place this week on the outskirts of Harrogate.

There, amid the prize pigs and cattle, showjumping, sheep-shearing, massive tractors and really cute bunnies, you will find the Great Yorkshire Show Fashion Pavilion.

It’s a large barn-style building housing a catwalk and seating for hundreds of spectators. It’s extremely popular (and not just when it’s raining), staging an impressive four runway presentations on each of the show’s three days, featuring a team of professional models (male and female) from Huddersfield-based agency Morton-Gledhill The Fashion Team, wearing the upcoming autumn/winter collections from the finest retailers and independent designers in the county and indeed the country.

John Lewis Leeds makes its Great Yorkshire Show debut this year, alongside Keighley-based menswear specialists Brook Taverner and Wetherby-based independent red carpet designer James Steward, who has dressed the likes of Kylie Minogue and Mr Selfridge star Katherine Kelly .

The GYS Fashion Pavilion is also an important platform for up-and-coming designers and this year will feature collections from fashion students and graduates from the University of Huddersfield, Hull School of Art & Design and Harrogate College.

It’s not just the models who are the stars of the Great Yorkshire Show, however. Arguably, the real style kings and queens of the massive three-day event are the impeccably, impressively dressed visitors, exhibitors and competitors.

There is no one particular look. On the contrary, it’s a wild and wonderful mix of styles, from country luxe (think Cordings) via equestrian separates to Chanel-esque chic, floral-print tea dresses, farmyard utility wear and festival boho trends. Sometimes mixed up in the one outfit, finished with wellies.

Practicality is paramount (and rain is forecast this year, so be warned), but the show is a lesson in how to combine weather-friendly protection with classic and contemporary fashion.

To celebrate Great Yorkshire Show style, we have teamed up with the GYS and John Lewis Leeds to find the event’s most stylish folk. To enter, take a picture of yourself (or a friend, colleague, relative, boss) at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show and post on your Twitter or Instagram, using the hashtag #GYScatwalk.

I will choose the winner on Friday, July 14, so make sure you’ve posted before noon on that date. The winner will receive a fabulous John Lewis experience for two, featuring a one-hour Personal Styling session with a glass of fizz and advice on how to put together your autumn/winter wardrobe in the best styles and colours for you both; lunch for two in John Lewis Leeds The Place to Eat on the Fourth floor; 30-minute treatments at the BeautyBAR by Clarins on the ground floor, choosing from eight treatments; and a covetable goody bag for two, filled with best-selling brands from the beauty range, home accessories and produce and a Clarins skin spa treatment voucher.
