SOUNDS OF THE CITY: Indie rockers DMA's Foals and Idles to headline concert series

A SOUNDS Of The City three night indie rock concert series is coming to the region with shows headlined by superstars DMA's, Foals and Idles, writes Graham Walker.

The three gigs, which also include special guests – full details below – will be held at Leeds Millennium Square next summer on July 8, 9 and 10, 2021.

First up is Idles on Thursday, July 8, with Foals on Friday, July 9 and DMA's headlining the final night on Saturday, July 10.

Renowned concert series Sounds Of The City is taking over Leeds Millennium Square in July 2021 for a run of headline shows featuring IDLES, FOALS and DMA’S.Since 2013, renowned concert series Sounds Of The City has been an integral part of the Manchester music scene with some of the most acclaimed live artists taking to the stage.

Now the event is expanding over the Pennines to Leeds Millennium Square - the bespoke outdoor live entertainment which is already a firm favourite amongst Yorkshire gig goers.

It is fully accessible and conveniently located on the the heart of the city.

The band have just celebrated their first number one after their much-anticipated third album, Ultra Mono, topped the Official UK Albums Chart. It also scored the fastest selling vinyl release of 2020.

The band’s last album, Joy as an Act of Resistance, peaked at Number 5 on its release in 2018 and was shortlisted for last year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize.

IDLES will also head out on a huge tour of UK and Ireland throughout May and June next year and due to high demand the band have just announced extra shows which will now see them play three consecutive dates at Manchester’s O2 Victoria Warehouse and four consecutive dates at London O2 Academy Brixton.

IDLES will be joined by special guests The Big Moon.

FOALS will headline the Square Friday, July 9 - following the biggest headline tour of their career next year, which will see them play across the UK including three successive sold out nights at London Olympia in May and a sold-out Sounds Of The City show in Manchester.

They released their critically acclaimed album, Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 2, in 2019, the most ambitious project of their career. The album follows the equally lauded Part 1 release and represents a new creative peak for the band.

Over the course of the project, FOALS landed their first UK #1 album and earned three prestigious awards: Best Group at the BRIT Awards, Best Album at the Q Awards and Best Live Act at the NME Awards. It was also nominated for the Mercury Prize.

Sydney’s DMA’S will headline Leeds Millennium Square on Saturday, July 10 and will be joined by special guests The Lathums.

Since bursting on the scene back in 2015, Tommy O’Dell, Matt Mason and Johnny Took have not stopped with their euphoric, thrilling and anthemic shows.

An impressive 40,000 tickets were sold on their last headline UK tour and they spent last summer touring with main stage sets at Isle of Wight, TRNSMT and Citadel festivals as well as huge outdoor shows with Courteeners, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds plus main support for Liam Gallagher’s 2019 UK arena tour.

They also sold out Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl in less than 24 hours - to be rescheduled for 2021. DMA’S critically acclaimed third album The Glow was released last month and charted at an impressive #4 in the official UK chart.

Over the years, Sounds Of The City has hosted sold out shows from the likes of Kylie, The National, Chic, New Order, Arcade Fire, The Kooks, elbow, The Wombats, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Rag N Bone Man, Last Shadow Puppets, Catfish And The Bottlemen, Paolo Nutini, James, Pixies and The Courteeners, right from the heart of Manchester City Centre.

In 2019 Sounds Of The City launched at Cardiff Castle with three incredible headline shows from The Killers, Manic Street Preachers and Paul Weller.
