The Netflix series debuted on Christmas Day and has been trending on the UK streaming site since.

But will there be a season 2, how soon can we binge watch new episodes again, and what is the next series likely to be about? This is what you need to know.

**Spoilers ahead for series one of Bridgerton**

What was Bridgerton series one about?

The first series was based on author Julia Quinn’s book ‘The Duke and I’ and follows the story of Daphne Bidgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) in 1813 London.

She is the first daughter of Lady and Viscount Bridgerton, and one of eight siblings.

The eight episodes follow her as she comes of age in London and faces the unfavourable marriage market.

In a bid to avoid marrying one of her many eligible suitors, she makes a pact with her older brother Anthony’s university friend, The Duke of Hastings - Simon Bassett (Regé-Jean Page).

Initially the pair strike up a deal to marry, both not keen to marry but forced to do so by societal pressure. However, as their friendship blossoms, so does their passion and romance.

The couple become betrothed after scandalously ‘engaging in relations’ in the gardens outside of a ball, through fear Daphne will be shunned if she is not to wed him.

Following their hurried marriage, the couple conceive a child which Daphne miscarries, before the season concludes with the couple welcoming their first child.

All seems so sweet and innocent? Well that would be the case if it wasn’t for Lady Whistledown

Anonymous gossip columnist Whistledown seems to know all the secrets, scandals and intricate details of the London upper classes.

Little do they know it is a young Miss Penelope Featherington who is spreading the dishonourable truths and causing uproar among the community.

By the end of the season the viewers know who Lady Whistledown is, but her neighbours and family are none the wiser.

From “illegitimate” pregnancies to unspoken same sex relationships, this series addresses the many taboos and stigmas which laced 1800s England.

Will there be another series?

The series is based on eight books by Julia Quinn, therefore fans could be in for another seven epic episodes.

Producer Shonda Rhimes of Shondaland Productions has yet to confirm that a second season is to be made.

However, Production Weekly suggested the filming of a second season was due to begin in the summer and is now scheduled for March.

The coronavirus pandemic could make this difficult - as the English setting will be restricted by current UK government guidelines.

Writer of the series, Chris Van Dusen has already told how he is in it for the long haul, if producers are to back another series.

He told Collider: "The first season was primarily about Daphne and her love story with Simon. But, this being a family of eight children and there being eight books, I would love to be able to focus and really tell stories and love stories for all the Bridgerton siblings. For each character, for sure. I would love that.”

When will series two be released?

With potential for another seven series, and the first series’ success - watched by more than 63 million households - Netflix’s fifth biggest original series launched to date - it will surely make a return.

But fans may need to remain patient, as even if filming went ahead in the first half of 2021, it could be 2022 before we get our next fix of Bridgerton.

What could season two be about?

Should the production follow the sequence of books, then the next series would be about the eldest of the Bridgerton siblings, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey).

Season one depicts him as the head of the family, following the untimely death of his father.

He has a lustful affair with a soprano, despite his unwillingness to marry her. Viscount Anthony appears to be infatuated by her, promising to keep her safe and cared for, but not as his wife.

The second book ‘Viscount Who Loved Me’, follows Anthony on his quest to find a wife.

But it wouldn’t be Bridgerton without scandal. This time in the form of Anthony’s soon-to-be sister-in-law, Kate Sheffield.

She will stop at nothing to avoid welcoming him into her family and meddles in his relationship with her sister to stop the marriage all together.

It is her actions and determination which soon turn Anthony’s eyes and attention to her.

Where can I watch season one?

Bridgerton is currently available to stream on the UK Netflix platform.
