Pub of the Week: Angel on the Green, York

Sign that an area is achingly middle class No 233. When someone knits woolly hats and ponchos for a statue. And they don't get nicked.

For the last few weeks three small figures that stand at the corner of Bishopthorpe Road and Scarcroft Road in York have been clad in new winter garb, but even if you hadn’t spotted them the reasons why this corner of the city has been named the North’s answer to Notting Hill are everywhere. At the Pig and Pastry, you can’t move for yummy mummies and there is even a shop dedicated to organic children’s clothing. The most recent addition is Angel on the Green. Based in what was the Cycle Heaven bike shop, it’s a hybrid between a bar, cafe and pizzeria, but it works.

The Angel is quite literally a bar of two halves. Its licence means that one room has to be alcohol free and during the day it does a busy trade in handmade cakes, while early evening it’s already become a popular hangout for families. The menu is limited, but what it does serve it does well.

The bar is bijou, so expect to get up close and personal with a couple of strangers. A decent range of local beers and an extensive and affordable wine list mean that it’s somewhere easy to linger – if you can find a seat.

The Angel, which is run as a private limited company with 12 members, complements rather than detracts from the existing mix of delis, cafes and restaurants. Once visited, it’s the kind of bar you will want to keep coming back to.
